Symbolism in "Moana" Restoring the Heart of Te Fiti

I watch a lot of Disney. A LOT. I would blame it on the fact that I have a toddler and baby, but I'll be honest with you, I probably like Disney movies more than they do. I've loved watching Disney ever since I can remember. They always make me feel good, and I'm a sucker for a happy ending. I've also noticed I tend to find a lot of symbolism is the story lines. Something I tend to do with a lot of things in life. I think that's common for us as people to do, look for the deeper meaning in things. I believe that's one reason Christ taught in parables.

One movie I've seen several times is "Moana", which I think has many strong themes with spiritual undertones.

Moana restores the heart of Te Fiti

The scene that I wanted to address is when Moana restores the heart of Te Fiti. I'll give a quick run down of what happens. Moana has been chosen to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Te Fiti, without her heart, is a firey monster set to destroy everything that comes her way. Moana, who the ocean listens to, commands the ocean to allow Te Fiti to come to her, as she holds her glowing heart in the air high above her head. Te Fiti then, very ferociously, begins making her way to Moana. While they are coming towards each other Moana sings the following lyrics:

I have crossed the horizon to find you. I know your name. They have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you. This is not who you are. You know who you are.

She then says:

Who you truly are.

Though I had watched this scene before, and it always had been very powerful, the last time I watched it really touched my heart. It came to me clearly that this situation is very similar to what the Savior, Jesus Christ, does for us through his atonement.

Lost and broken, we may find at times that we have forgotten who we are. We might feel like our hearts have been stolen and that pain and suffering abound. But when we allow him, the Savior can restore our hearts and remind us of who we really are. Through his atoning sacrifice, we can find comfort and peace. We can be transformed into our true selves through his love. Can't you hear him speaking those words to you? He knows your name. He knows that life has beaten and broken you, but he knows that you are far more than that. He knows who you truly are.

I hope that this scene touches your heart as it did mine. I know that Jesus Christ can fix what is broken and heal our hearts no matter how broken we may feel. In Psalm 34:17-18 we read:

17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

It is only through Christ that we can receive true and everlasting joy. I know that his love for us is more than we can possibly imagine, and through that love we are saved.
